Experimental vs. Certified Aircraft

Small airplanes are broadly categorized into two classifications — FAA Certified and Experimental Amateur-Built. The distinguishing feature lies in the certification process.

For an FAA Certified aircraft, every component — from the propeller to the rudder fastening bolts — must undergo rigorous FAA inspection and approval. This exhaustive process can span 5-7 years, leading many smaller Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and aftermarket manufacturers to opt out of it.

On the other hand, an Experimental Amateur-Built aircraft doesn’t imply a lack of professional assembly or engineering. Instead, it indicates that the airplane parts haven’t undergone the FAA approval process.

The Super Cub aviation market is evenly split between these two classifications. However, the Experimental category is gaining traction due to its cost-effectiveness, with most parts being approximately 25% cheaper.

Nonetheless, the Certified class remains indispensable. For any aircraft used for commercial purposes or passenger transportation, certification is mandatory, ensuring this market’s enduring relevance.
